History + Folklore

First mentioned in Sanskrit texts in India seven thousand years ago, coriander is truly an ancient spice. The seed was found in Egyptian tombs and also discovered in Bronze Age ruins (ca 3200–600 BCE) on the Aegean Islands. The ancient Greek and Roman physicians Hippocrates, Paracelsus, Dioscorides, and the naturalist Pliny the Elder were all quite familiar with this spice. In fact Pliny suggested that the best coriander of his time was from Egypt. The ancients employed coriander as a meat preservative amongst many other things.

Love, Health, Healing

Masculine, Mars, Fire

Coriander is best used in matters relating to love. It can be added to sachets, charms, or spells. It’s edible and can be used in mixes and drinks to enhance love or lust. It can be crushed into incense and burned to achieve the same energies. Due to its association with love it is often used at handfastings (and other rituals of union). It can be used to ease the pain of bad love affairs, and to promote peace between people who struggle to get along.

It is also used for protection. Grow in the garden and hang in the home to bring peace and ward against negativity and (depending on the user’s intent) an array of negative things. Wear or carry the seeds to ward off disease and migraines.

Warnings: No known precautions.
